How Money Planning Helped Me Leave My 9–5

I can hardly believe I’m writing this, but... it’s my last week at my full-time job in corporate finance. Starting next week, I’ll be fully focused on running my financial coaching business! It still feels surreal—and it’s a big change. One that comes with a swirl of emotions: excitement, nervousness, gratitude, and a sense of “wow, this is really happening.”

But more than anything, it’s the beginning of a new era—one I’ve been quietly preparing for, even before I realized it.

The Assumption People Keep Making

As I’ve shared the news with friends and colleagues, there’s one assumption that comes up frequently:
“Wow, your business must really be taking off!”

And while that’s true—my business has been gaining momentum—it’s only part of the story. Two other things have made this leap possible:

  1. My husband’s income gives us stability and flexibility. I’m incredibly grateful for his support—emotionally and financially—as I take this next step.

  2. But just as important is this: we’ve been planning and saving for years.

That’s why I’m sharing this—not just to celebrate, but to show how planning ahead financially opens doors.

The Freedom That Comes from Planning Ahead

A year ago, I had no idea I’d be starting my own business or leaving a stable, predictable paycheck behind. But because we’ve been intentional with our money—saving consistently and spending less than we make each month—I now have options.

And that’s what I want to highlight most:

Planning ahead with your money gives you choices. It gives you freedom. It gives you flexibility.

That’s the message I hope more people start to associate with budgeting. Because let’s be honest—most people hear the word “budget” and immediately think of restriction and deprivation. Of saying no. Of never having fun.

But I see budgeting differently.

Budgeting = Freedom, Not Restriction

To me, budgeting—or what I often call “money planning”—isn’t about deprivation.
It’s about spending with intention and using your money as a tool to help you build the life you want.

Thanks to years of consistent saving, I’ve built a safety net that gives me the freedom to take a risk on something I care deeply about: supporting others with their money.

Letting Go of Old Measures of Success

I won’t lie—leaving behind a steady income and a corporate title brings up mental hurdles. For a long time, I equated success with salary and status. But now, I’m redefining success as doing meaningful work, on my terms—and building a life aligned with what truly matters to me.

Want That Kind of Freedom Too?

If this resonates with you—if you're craving more flexibility, more peace, or simply more confidence in how you manage your money—this is exactly the kind of transformation I help my coaching clients with.

Whether your dream is to take a sabbatical, pivot careers, or simply feel less anxious about your finances, I’d love to help you build a money plan that supports your life—not the other way around.

It all starts with scheduling your free Q&A call, where we’ll chat about your goals and see if my coaching is the right fit for you. Click here to schedule.
