Start With Awareness—The First Step Toward Intentional Spending

When I started using Noom—a health and weight loss app that focuses on behavior change—it encouraged me to weigh myself every day. So I did—because I’m a rule follower.

What surprised me was how much that simple action affected my choices. Just stepping on the scale each morning made me more aware of the calories I was consuming throughout the day. Sometimes, that awareness alone was enough to make me pause before reaching for a second dessert.

I wasn’t trying to restrict—I was just paying attention. And that made a bigger difference than I thought it would.

That’s the power of awareness. And the same principle applies to your money.

Most People Don’t Know Where Their Money’s Going

When I onboard new clients, I ask how much they’re spending in different categories—groceries, restaurants, subscriptions, gas, etc.

A common answer?

“I honestly don’t know.”

That’s normal. Many people have a decent grasp of what they earn, but not on where they spend their money. And when you don’t know, it can be hard to make progress toward your financial goals.

That’s why awareness is the first step.

Awareness = Power

Let’s say you want to save for a vacation, pay off your credit card faster, or build up your emergency fund. You don’t need a complicated budget to start—you just need to get curious.

Try this:

  • Open your most recent bank or credit card statement

  • Pick one category to explore (groceries, eating out, Amazon, etc.)

  • Add it up—not to judge, just to observe

This isn’t about calculating the number perfectly or cutting anything. It’s about seeing your current spending clearly so you can choose what, if anything, you want to adjust.

You Can’t Adjust What You Can’t See

If you're looking to free up more money for something meaningful, awareness is where it starts.

Some clients realize they’re spending more on eating out than they expected. Others are surprised by Amazon purchases or subscriptions they forgot about. These aha moments can be a powerful motivator to start changing your spending patterns—if that’s what you want to do.

When you know where your money is going, you can align it with where you want it to go.
